A one-day seminar designed to educate people on the key elements of subsea tiebacks – subsea umbilicals, risers, flowlines (surf) to be conducted under the auspices of the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT). For registered professional engineers, this course counts for 6 professional development hours.

About the Presenters



Brian Skeels Key Elements of Subsea TiebacksBrian Skeels, Senior Technical Advisor, TechnipFMC
Brian has 38 years experience in subsea completion and pipeline design and installation. 5 years with Exxon Production Research Company working on Exxon’s famous SPS and UMC subsea systems, and the rest with TechnipFMC. As a TechnipFMC Senior Technical Advisor, he serves as a technical advocate for new technologies and strategic planning specialist for frontier technologies, HPHT, and remote well intervention, including efforts delving into subsea systems engineering and field architecture, riser and riserless well intervention, ROV interfaces, remote robotics technology, hydrate remediation, and well plug & abandonment programs. 





Don Schlater, Retired
Don Schlater has held both Technical and Sales management roles with the Castrol group of BP since late 1997. Prior to that he was the Director of Projects for FSSL (now Aker Solution). From 1986 to 1993 he started, developed and was General Manager for MacDermid Offshore Solutions business (formerly Marston Bentley). Prior to this he was product manager for Drilling Controls and Motion Compensation systems for Shaffer now National Oilwell Varco. He began his oilfield career with Exxon Production research after his USAF stay. He was an Air Force project manager at the Air Force Weapons lab working in the area of Nuclear weapons effect research. He did both undergraduate and graduate work in Mechanical engineering at Tulane University. His technical affiliations include SUT - Treasurer, SPE – API 17 committee member, ASME - 40 year member, Tau Beta Pi – Engineering Honor Fraternity, SIGMA XI - International Honor Society of Science and Engineering.
 
 





Charles Horn, NanoRidge Materials, Inc
More than forty years experience as designer, engineer, manager and project director in the areas of R&D, design, manufacturing, fabrication, and commissioning of subsea, deep water, marginal field and floating production systems for the offshore oil and gas industry.  Currently is Senior Advisor with NanoRIdge Materials, Inc. His major projects include Amaco Cadlao – first FPSO with Subsea wells, Placid Green Canyon 29 – first Floating, Production System in the Gulf of Mexico, Amaco Liuhua – first Subsea Tieback with Electric Submersible Pumps, Shell Mensa – first deployable hydrate remediation system, BP Atlantis, PDVSA (ped-e-vay-sa), Dragon Field – first subsea field development in Venezuela, Chevron Jack & St Malo, BP Mad Dog II, Chevron Malange and BP Kaskida.
 

 

Karl Schnakenburg, Subsea Engineering Advisor, BHP
Karl Schnakenburg is a mechanical engineer with over 30 years of experience in subsea engineering including design, manufacturing, procurement, installation and operation of subsea wellheads, BOP’s and subsea production systems. One of his most interesting work assignments was the delivery and testing of the Deepwater Drillship C.R. LUIGs which was built in Belfast, N. Ireland at the famous Harland & Wolff shipyard. Currently, he is a Global Engineering Advisor for all of BHP Billiton’s subsea developments. Since joining BHP in 1993, he has enjoyed many years living and travelling overseas working on major subsea development projects in SE Asia in Australia, Vietnam, ZOCA, Philippines, Canada and the US GoM.
